About the Essay
The Gravity Research Foundation has run its essay competition annually since 1949, and it is one of the most respected awards in gravitational physics. Past winners include Stephen Hawking and Roger Penrose. Wilczek and Manikandan's winning essay examines the quantum structure of gravitational radiation, work closely related to their research on how black hole ringdowns can carry subtle quantum signatures. The essay was published in the October 2025 special issue of the International Journal of Modern Physics D.
