International symposium on the future of physics and astronomy and inauguration ceremony of the founding director Frank Wilczek of the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute was grandly held at the Lecture Hall of Tsung Dao LEE Library from September 15 to 16, 2017. About 100 well-known famous scientists including dozens of American Academicians and Chinese Academicians, artists, teachers and students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University participated in the conference. Academician Yipeng Jing, Dean of Physics and Astronomy School of SJTU, hosted the opening ceremony. Professor Feng Gu, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of SJTU, attended and addressed on the ceremony.

Professor Feng Gu, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, made a speech for welcoming all the guests and scholars. He said, Tsung-Dao Lee Institute was jointly established with the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Shanghai Municipal Government. At present, Shanghai Jiao Tong University takes responsibility to operate the Institute as its contractor and trustee. TDLI is an important measurement for China and Shanghai Municipal Government to strive to develop a world-class top research institute, at the same time, it also makes contributions to the development of Shanghai Innovation Center with global influence. On behalf of Professor Tsung Dao Lee, professor Feng Gu congratulated professor Frank Wilczek as the founding director of TDLI and extended best wishes for the future of TDLI.

Professor Frank Wilczek, Nobel Laureate in Physics, made an inauguration speech as the founding director of TDLI, looking forward to a bright future for the development of TDLI and physics. Professor F. Duncan M. Haldane memorized his experiences with professor Tsung-Dao Lee, and congratulated Frank Wilczek appointed as the founding director of TDLI. Professor Xiangdong Ji, Senior fellow of TDLI, introduced the development direction of TDLI and the grand goal of building the world’s top research institute. Professor Xiaogang He, associate fellow of TDLI, reviewed the significant contribution to physics, Chinese science and technology career and education which professor Tsung-Dao Lee made in the past decades. Professor Kok Khoo Phua, Director of Institute of Advanced Studies, Nanyang Technology University and President of World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd., Singapore, summarized the construction experience, academic achievements and international developments of Institute of Advanced Studies. Professor Annti Niemi, Academician of Finland Academy of Science, elaborated the history, research frontier and global perspective of Nordita Center of Theoretical Physics. Professor Vincent Liu, Associate Fellow of TDLI and Director of Wilczek Quantum Center, introduced the plan for scientific research, personnel and future development of WQC.

Then the international symposium on the futureof physics and astronomy was held. The symposium focused on three research fields including fundamental particle physics, astronomy and cosmology, and quantum science and technology.
