It was long thought that bosons and fermions exhausted the possibilities for particle behavior, but anyons (named by Frank) joined the party as a theoretical concept in the 1980s. Anyons are now believed to occur in many settings, and are the basis for “topological quantum computing”, a promising approach to quantum information processing. This early text and reprint collection, containing many of the foundational papers, was a milestone in the development of the subject.
